As December moves closer, the mood on campus starts to change. At MAST Academy, students know that winter break begins after Friday, December 19, and that date sits in the back of everyone’s mind. Classes are still running, assignments are still due, but it gets harder to stay locked in when the break feels so close. The pressure to finish strong mixes with the urge to mentally check out.
For Isabel Huber, an 11th grader at MAST Academy, staying focused means thinking ahead. “I try to remember that I am going to college next year and that it is important for me to keep my grades up and work hard,” she says. That long-term mindset helps when motivation dips. Isabel also finds small ways to stay productive: “I like to watch “back to school” {YouTube} videos so it makes me feel productive.” Even simple routines can help students feel structured when the school year starts to slow down.
Still, not everyone pushes through by forcing constant work. Andres Montes de Oca approaches the weeks before break differently. “I take it day by day, remembering that if I have fun I perform better,” he explains. For many students, balance matters. Taking short breaks, seeing friends, or stepping away for a bit can actually make schoolwork feel more manageable instead of overwhelming.
That balance becomes especially important because, as Andres points out, “It is easy to slip off and that is why you have to stay in the right headspace.” With holidays approaching, routines disappear fast. One way students can stay grounded is through exercise. Physical activity has been shown to improve brain function, helping with focus, memory, and stress. Even a short walk, a workout, or playing a sport can make it easier to sit down and actually get work done afterward.
As winter break approaches, the challenge isn’t choosing between hard work and rest; it’s managing both. The final days before December 19 still count, even when motivation drops. Maintaining momentum doesn’t mean ignoring the excitement of break; it means finding realistic ways to finish strong while taking care of yourself at the same time.
