Dear Juniors, you’re in SAT season.

For many of you, this season might not end until the first months of your senior year, so get ready. As a survivor of SAT season, I’ll give you guys some tips.

  • SECURE A TUTOR/FIND A PROGRAM: You need to be locked in NOW. The SAT is a learned test, NOT an IQ test. This means that you have to study it to get a high score. That’s what tutors are there for, to teach you the test. Tutors can be expensive though, so free programs are offered:
    • Khan Academy
    • Ray Dass (summer of junior year) (1000% recommend!!!)
    • Kaplan
  • MAKE A SCHEDULE: meet with your tutor once or twice a week depending on how close your test is. If you do not have a tutor, make a schedule for yourself to do practice tests and stick to it. CONSISTENCY IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR THE SAT!
  • SPACE OUT TESTS: It takes up to two months of study to dramatically increase your test scores, so space them out throughout the year.
  • DO AS MANY AS YOU WANT, BUT DONT GET EXHAUSTED: Take at least 3 different SAT tests.
  • THE SAT IS NOT EVERYTHING: sometimes you get your goal score, and sometimes you don’t. Remember that the SAT does not stand alone. You will have your activities and grades to back you up. Do not give up if you don’t reach your goal score!
  • ENJOY JUNIOR YEAR: SAT season or not, enjoy your junior year! You don’t want to regret it!

Mercedes Halliburton is a senior at MAST Academy. She is in her fourth year at the school, arriving in 2019 from St. Theresa Catholic School. Halliburton enjoys MAST more than her previous school because she believes that there is more freedom. Halliburton likes MAST because she enjoys swimming and water. She also enjoys reading and writing, saying that it is her favorite subject. Her least favorite subject is math, and her hardest year was junior year. She doesn’t have a least favorite teacher and she likes most of the teachers. She also likes MAST because it has a nice view and is so close to the beach. Even though MAST is fun, Halliburton claims it is also a challenging school with many hard classes.
