One FC 2010 sophomore, Sean Hata emphasized how competition at this level pushes teams to improve. His team is currently ranked second in Florida, a position he views as motivation rather than pressure. “Being ranked second definitely motivates us,” Hata said. “It shows that all the work we have been putting in is paying off, but it also reminds us that there is still another level we can reach.” He added that the team uses the ranking as fuel to continue improving during training sessions.
Consistency, according to Hata, is the key factor separating good teams from the best ones. “We have the talent and the intensity to compete with anyone,” he said, “but the best teams are locked in for the full 90 minutes.” He explained that minimizing mistakes, improving transitions, and capitalizing on scoring opportunities will be key when facing top-level opponents at the showcase.
At MLS Next Fest, pressure is unavoidable, especially with college coaches and professional scouts observing from the sidelines. Hata said he tries to block out outside expectations once the match begins. “Once you step on the field, it is about doing your job and trusting your teammates,” he said. “We focus on our preparation, mentality, and execution, and let the results take care of themselves.”
On a personal level, Hata sees the event as an opportunity to grow and make an impact. “My main goal is to be someone my teammates can rely on,” he said. “Whether that is leading vocally, competing defensively, or helping create chances, I want to make a difference whenever I’m on the field.” He is especially looking forward to competing against unfamiliar teams, noting that different playing styles force players to adapt and think faster.
Beyond competition, MLS Next Fest also serves as a learning experience for younger athletes aspiring to reach the next level in the sport. Hata offered advice to players hoping to participate in the future. “Stay consistent and be patient with your development,” he said. “Focus on the details, work hard when no one is watching, and always be coachable. Opportunities like this come from years of dedication.”
