Taylor Swift’s new album captures hearts worldwide
Grammy-winning singer and songwriter Taylor Swift released her 12th studio album on Friday, October 3. Within the first week of the album’s release, she sold over 4 million units, breaking Adele’s previous record of 3.378 million copies in the week of the release of album 25.
After listening to the album, “The Life of a Showgirl”, MAST students have different views on how much they enjoyed it.
“It’s my favorite album,” says 7th Grader Maya Galor. She thinks the songs are catchy and have a good melody. She also shares how she enjoys Taylor’s newer music, which some others also prefer more than her older albums.
Sophomore Juan C. Nadal shares this enjoyment for Taylor’s newer music. His favorite albums are her other two most recent ones, The Tortured Poets Department and Midnights. But with this album, he says “In my opinion, it’s not my favorite.” He explains that this album is very different for Taylor Swift; “they either didn’t feel like her lyrics or they didn’t belong in the album.” This album has a very different vibe from her other recent albums. “I think it’s definitely more happy and upbeat than what we have heard in a long time,” says Juan. Taylor Swift is known for her mostly sad, emotional breakup songs.
The amount of support fans have can really be seen with the reactions to “The Official Release Party of a Showgirl”, which is a film that was in theaters from October 3 to 5. The film included behind-the-scene moments of filming the music video for “The Fate of Ophelia”, lyric videos, and Taylor’s explanation on the meaning of some songs on the album. It made television news with how entire theaters gathered in the aisles, dancing and singing in circles all together.
Maya talks about the reason why she wanted to go watch the film, “I’m a fan of hers and I want to see the new movie she created.” She explains that she would’ve watched the film no matter what it was about, showing her dedication to Taylor Swift and her work. Jiya also shares her reason for attending the film, “I wanted to go see it so I could really understand what the songs were about and what the lyrics meant.” The Swiftie community is well known for always looking for deeper meanings and small details that can hint to what is coming soon from Taylor Swift, even if sometimes it can become very excessive.
Taylor Swift is incredibly influential; her popularity and fame will only continue to grow as she produces more music. As the album reiterates, Swift will always be a polarizing force within the music industry.
