Beyond the major events that define Miami, a smaller annual festival draws crowds to Miami Beach each year at the North Beach Bandshell. The festival celebrated its 10th anniversary this year, though the venue itself has served as a community landmark since it opened in 1961. Designed by architect Norman Giller, the curved roof and open stage allow sound to project clearly over approximately 2,000 seated patrons. The unique architecture permits guests to enjoy the ocean breeze without sacrificing audio quality.
Senior Lola Noales, a regular visitor to the venue, said the design creates a distinct listening experience. “You can really notice the difference once you’re under that curved roof.” Noales also said, “The acoustics seem pretty sharp considering this is an outdoor venue. The curved roof captures the high notes and sends them directly to you, yet you still receive that open ocean breeze.
The Rhythm Foundation is responsible for much of the programming, including booking a variety of artists from Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, and the United States. This variety affords guests the opportunity to see everything from salsa bands and reggae artists to electronic DJs and indie musicians.
“There was definitely a wide range of styles! Some nights featured a local salsa band that had everyone dancing in the aisle, and other nights featured an indie band from somewhere else in the world. They really focus on providing that international sound,” Noales recalls.
To maintain its commitment to the community, many performances are priced significantly lower than those held at larger venues in downtown Miami. This accessibility makes the venue popular with college students and families. “Even when the show is completely sold out, it still feels like a block party in a neighborhood. Noales said. You don’t receive that frenzied, chaotic atmosphere you would typically encounter at one of the huge festivals. It is the type of venue where you’ll probably run into someone you know.”
Because the venue is dedicated to providing a unique experience, visitors should plan their trip with intention. Review the calendar and purchase your tickets online in advance. Additionally, it is best to arrive at the venue prior to sunset in order to ensure easier parking and shorter wait times.
Visitors are also encouraged to bring a light jacket for the evening winds and to dine at nearby North Beach restaurants before the show to avoid food lines inside. Ultimately, the venue supports local businesses and emerging artists by driving foot traffic to the surrounding neighborhood. While attending a performance allows guests to experience a concert, it also contributes to the preservation of local arts and cultural programming within the community.
