MAST Academy welcomed families, friends, and community members to campus this week for its highly anticipated Winter Showcase, an annual celebration of student creativity, talent, and hard work. The event transformed the school into a lively winter stage, highlighting performances and projects from a wide range of student groups.
The evening opened with warm greetings and festive decorations that set the tone for a night of celebration. Attendees crowded into the auditorium as the performing arts students kicked off the program with musical performances ranging from classical pieces to modern arrangements. One of the crowd favorites was the Frozen classic, “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” performed by eighth-grader Danilo Rincon, who gave it a rock twist.
“I was really impressed by Danilo’s performance, as I wasn’t expecting him to have such good vocal control. The song brings back memories of my childhood while also making it enjoyable for our age group,” said eighth-grader Tianna Herelius. Additionally, the school’s band and chorus each performed seasonal favorites, earning enthusiastic applause. Other performances took place throughout the school day so that students who were unable to attend the night’s festivities could enjoy the event. “The dance crew choreography didn’t fail to catch my attention. Their dance was well executed and the songs added to the festive mood,” states Nicholas John Lagos.
One of the standout portions of the night came from the theater and dance departments, whose students presented scenes, monologues, and choreographed pieces they had spent months preparing. Junior Emma Llovet shared her experience: “We worked for weeks on our performance to ‘Jingle Bell Rock,’ inspired by Mean Girls. It was our introduction to the dance, and I wanted the crowd to be engaged and excited for what was to come.” Their performances showcased not only artistic skill but also teamwork and stage confidence — cornerstones of MAST’s arts programs.
Beyond the stage, the visual arts and STEM students also had opportunities to shine. Hallways were lined with student artwork, photography, and multimedia projects, while science and engineering students set up displays featuring robotics, research posters, and hands-on demonstrations. The Night of the Arts at MAST Basel happens the week before the showcase; thus, in an effort to continue exposing students to the arts, the school hosts its own version of the event.
Art Teacher Ms. Lacayo shared the inspiration for the event: “Night of the Arts at MAST Basel is a celebration of our exceptionally talented students in the visual arts, music, and culinary arts. This special evening highlights the power of creativity and artistic expression, showcasing to our school community the vital role the arts play in shaping and inspiring our students at MAST Academy.” Junior Gabriella Lopez added, “The event allows students to gain recognition for their artwork and showcase their latest works to friends and family.” Visitors explored everything from digital design projects to marine science presentations, reflecting the diverse interests that thrive at MAST.
Teachers and administrators praised the showcase as a meaningful chance for students to express themselves beyond the classroom. Many families noted how the event helped them see the depth of their children’s creativity and the supportive culture that MAST fosters. As the evening came to a close, students gathered with friends and families to take photos, celebrate their accomplishments, and enjoy the festive atmosphere. The Winter Showcase once again proved to be a highlight of the school year, bringing together talent, community, and the spirit of the season.
