Should school start later? That is the question administrators, parents, students, and school staff ask themselves every year.
Many people argue that we need children to go to school early in the morning because that is when they learn best, or when their brain is at the sharpest.
Another argument is that teenagers need to get used to waking up early for school because that if what they will have to do when they get a job. High school freshman, Aliza Aksoy, says ” In the future when we all begin to work professionally, we will be expected to wake up early and do our work properly.”
They also say that children need to be in school early so parents can get to work on time. If students don’t have school until 10 am, then how are their parents supposed to get to work on time?
Others argue that school needs to start later to give students enough time to sleep. During high school, students’ internal clock shifts, causing them to be awake later and sleep later. If students have to wake up at 6 am every morning to get ready for school, they won’t be getting enough sleep.
“Teenagers aren’t even fully awake until 10am.” says Ms. Ganuza, a teacher here at MAST academy. Some people say that if teenagers aren’t even awake until 10am, there is no use in them coming to school that early to fall asleep.
