The MAST Makos Boys soccer team continue their undefeated season while the Lady Makos soccer team stretch their game winning streak.

This year brought out a nasty pandemic and an even nastier fight to win for the MAST Makos soccer teams. Like all sports teams, the Makos boys and girls soccer teams experienced a delay in starting their season. Normally, the teams hold tryouts in early October and within a week begin practice for their season starting in November, but this year their whole schedule was postponed about a month. Tryouts for both teams did not happen until mid-November, leaving time available for only about three practices before both teams’ first game on December 3 against Key West. Senior Captain of the Boys Soccer Team, Franco Grotolla, said “heading to our first game I was worried. We only had had two weeks of practice, while every other year we would normally have a month. A month to get to know one another off and on the field. We barely knew how to play together.” Despite the concern, the boys claimed a 2-1 win over the Key West Conchs, while the girls soccer team’s game ended in a tie.

The following week, on December 7, the Makos girls soccer team dominated Miami Springs High School, claiming their first win of the season with a tremendous 4-0 game. “The game against Springs meant a lot for the whole team. For us seniors it was the first time we had beaten Springs since 2017, since our freshmen year. It was also the game of our most memorable goal so far in the season. Every one of our players on the field touched the ball, we all participated in the goal” said senior captain Agustina Bettocchi. Victory did not end there for the Lady Makos Soccer team for on December 10 they gained another win against St. Brendan High School.

On December 9 the MAST Makos Boys soccer team picked up a win against Miami Jackson Senior High School and then another win on December 14 against S.L.A.M. “With every play we get smarter. Our teamwork, speed and enthusiasm gets better the more time we spent together on the field and it shows in our games” said senior Ignacio Abbondati. The boys went on to win their last game at home before the holiday break on December 17 against Ransom Everglades School.

Hopes are high for both the Makos boys and girls soccer teams’ remaining seasons as well as the future for the teams. “Our team is fairly young, with only four seniors and most of the starters being sophomores and freshmen” said junior player of the Lady Makos soccer team Amanda Spencer. The future of MAST Academy soccer looks bright and promising.

After the holiday break both teams aim to secure a spot in Districts as well as claim #1 seed at GMAC.
