On September 21, 2024, a Toyota SUV and a Mazda SUV were involved in a terrifying car accident. The accident caused one of the cars to flip over I-95 near NW 2nd street at about 3:30 pm.
Somehow, the Toyota had flipped over the barrier on I-95 and fell onto the Flagler St Bridge underneath. Luckily, for the passenger in the car, it had landed face up and there were no fatalities or serious injuries. The driver of the Toyota was okay but was admitted to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
The deadliest part of I-95 is a stretch between Fort Lauderdale and Miami. This part of the road is what many people who live in South Florida take to work, school, and daily errands. I-95 stretches across the whole country, and the part where we live is the deadliest.
Car accidents, like the Toyota flipping over, are what make people uneasy about driving in Miami. High school sophomore, Leila Gasca, said “I feel worried and anxious about the car flipping over, and overall driving on I-95.” Many parents feel the same way about letting their children drive at 16. There are some parents who will not allow their children to drive until they are 18 and have moved out.
Since Miami is a very populated city, there are many people on the roads at all times. The more cars on the road, the more likely an accident is going to happen. Sophomore, Leila Gasca later says “Driving in Miami is sometimes scary, since there are so many people on the roads, and you never know what can happen next.”
Highways in Miami, especially I-95, are very unpredictable because you never know who is focused on driving and who is distracted. Ms. Paz, an English teacher at MAST, says, “I think people are often distracted by their cell phones and even by other things like eating in the car, so, it’s dangerous, and I think people have to have a singular focus on the road.”
