The MAST Academy girls’ soccer team warms up for its GMAC quarterfinal against TERRA on Jan. 9, 2024.

On January 9th, the MAST Academy girls’ soccer team comes out on top 2-1 against Terra Environmental Research after a lengthy wait for a second referee. The game was originally scheduled for 4 pm but was delayed 2 hours due to a tardy game official which left both teams feeling more anxious about the game than before. Despite the setback, the Makos were able to get things back on track.

8th Grader Daniela Sanchez-Zaccaria made one of the two points and Senior Jessica Engel made the second. Senior and Goalie Heidi Schultz made 4 saves over the course of the game. 8th grader Luisa Verswyel and Junior Florencia Alvarez both had 1 assist.

Sasha Chernikov, Staff Writer
Sasha Chernikov is a freshman student excited to write for The Beacon. Chernikov previously attended Ponce de Leon Middle and although MAST Academy is intimidating to her, she is, “happy to be here.” Journalism is interesting to her because she loves informative writing and looks forward to “reinterpreting” stories. She would consider a career in journalism in the future. One thing you can expect from her as a reader is that she will “deliver the truth”, Chernikov says. You can also expect some sports profiles from her as she loves interviewing people and anything athletic.
