Studying or doing work with music is a controversial topic because there are many different
opinions. There are pros and cons to doing work with music.
Some of the pros to doing work while listening to music is that it can help motivate you and give
you more energy to get your work done. Listening to good music boosts your mood because it
makes you happy. When you are happy, you are more likely to be engaged in what you are doing
and do better.
Listening to music while you do work also helps to keep some people focused.
Freshman Maya Litz says “it helps make sure I don’t get distracted because my mind doesn’t
wander as much.”
Working while listening to music can help you memorize what you are working on better. If you
memorize something, but it is stored in the back of your brain, music can help you retrieve it.
However, listening to music also has many cons.
One of the cons of listening to music while studying and doing work is it can cause some people
to become overstimulated. If you are trying to concentrate on doing your work and you have
people singing in your ear, it can become too much for some people, and they might become
overstimulated.
Another one of the cons to listening to music while studying is some people need complete
silence while doing work so thst they can focus on what they are doing.
JC Nadal, freshman at MAST says, “I need absolute quiet so I can even try to relay all the
information I have to learn.”
Listening to music while studying can also distract you from understanding what you are doing.
It could cause you to not be able to focus and really understand what you are reading. It could
also make you start focusing in the music and singing along to the song instead of paying
attention to what you are doing.
Freshman Aliza Aksoy said “When I listen to music, I can’t pay attention to what I am studying
because my mind just keeps singing song with the music.”
It can be hard for people to concentrate while listening to music, but it can also be helpful. It
really just depends on the person who is doing the work and what works best for them. Everyone
has different preferences, so different things will work for them.
