Started in 2008 as a rather minuscule operation, Fireman Derek’s has been serving up pies for over a decade. The pie shop has since grown from its humble beginnings, expanding into two brick and mortar locations: Wynwood and Coconut Grove. Known for their unique takes on classic pies, the shop has about a dozen flavors they serve year round.
Recently, they have even released yet another sweet treat: ice cream. The new lineup includes key lime pie, birthday cake—and in the spirit of fall—pumpkin cheesecake. Each ice cream has its respective Fireman Derek’s pie or cake in it. A 5 ounce scoop goes for $4.50.
Fireman Derek’s has also released new seasonal pies. The pumpkin cheesecake is a brilliant take on a classic pumpkin pie. It combines traditional cheesecake and pumpkin pie, the special mashup a spectacle of its own, a stark contrast proving to be a bit jarring at first. However, the $6.00 slice was well worth its initial obscurity. The two different pies work beautifully together, the brilliant balance of flavors between the pumpkin and fluffy cheesecake makes for the perfect pie this fall.
Their pumpkin pie, by contrast, is a classic pie. Dissimilar to the many of those on the rack, this pie is rather traditional, keeping true to the look and taste of your typical pumpkin pie. Despite its conventional look, this is no average pumpkin pie. The $6.00 slice’s flavor is natural, yet still distinguishable alongside the many added spices; the ratio of filling to crust is near perfect, the two layers topped with a dollop of light whipped cream.
Fireman Derek’s pumpkin pie differentiates itself amongst its unconventional counterparts through its convention. On that rack, it’s traditionally is declarative—its delicious originality surely worth a try!
