The Oscars will be taking place on March 10th, this Sunday, as awards season is coming to an end in grand fashion finishing with the Oscars, probably the most prestigious award in cinematic achievements. This will be the 96th time the Oscars have taken place since they first started in 1929.
This year showcases movies like Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer, and Anatomy of a Fall shined among those released and have won many awards and all these movies are nominated for multiple Oscars.
However there were some big snubs this year including: Greta Gerwig for best director (Barbie), Leonardo DiCaprio for Best Lead Actor (Killers of the Flower Moon) and Cailee Spaeny for Best Lead Actress (Pricilla).
“Greta Gerwig wasn’t nominated for best director, I think she should’ve been nominated” Esperanza Martinez, the film teacher at MAST adds in on the biggest snub this year.
One of the most sought after awards is Best Picture. the current nominees for Best picture are The Holdovers, American Fiction, The Zone of Interest, Barbie, Oppenheimer, Poor Things, Past lives, Anatomy of a Fall, Maestro, Killers of the Flower Moon.
The consensus favorite is Oppenheimer but Poor Things and American Fiction have a sneaky chance at winning.
Since the nominations already snubbed Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig, Barbie winning best picture doesn’t seem likely.
“When you see Gladstone…the way that she sobbed that part there, I wept…I really got caught in the emotion.” Martinez agrees Oppenheimer is most likely to win but as to the movie among those nominated she enjoyed the most and really affected her, it’s Killers of the Flower Moon.
Martin Scorsese has only won an Oscar once even though he’s considered one of the greatest directors of our time. This year he has another shot for his work on Killers of the Flower Moon but he’s up against big name Christopher Nolan who directed Oppenheimer, I’d take Christopher Nolan simply because Oppenheimer has done really well at awards shows and is even nominated for 13 Oscars (most by any film) and his work was brilliant. That being said Martin Scorsese directed a complex film perfectly.
“I think this year is probably going to be Christopher Nolan’s year although it should be Martin Scorsese’s” Martinez said.
For Best Lead Actress Emma Stone who played the lead in Poor Things is the favorite and will likely win but she has competition in Lily Gladstone who performed very well in Killers of The Flower Moon.
“How can you compare?” Martinez rebutted when I asked her who she thought should win, in her eyes both are very deserving of it but you can’t compare two completely different genres and movies so easily like that.
This is all you need to know for the upcoming Oscars which takes place on March 10th, 2024.
