As summer approaches, MAST students are pouring their money into everything from trendy gadgets to thrilling experiences. As part of an ongoing trend of spending, the items and experiences are shaping the way teens are enjoying their break from school.
Gadgets, Gear, and Gearheads
While some students are opting to spend their hard-earned cash on fun activities, others are investing in the latest technology. The trend? A major influx of purchases related to gaming, social media, and tech accessories.
“I just got a new gaming laptop, and it’s been so worth it,” said Agustin, a senior. “I’m saving for a bigger monitor next, and maybe a new headset. My friends and I play Fortnite and other games all day, so it’s a solid investment.”
Gaming consoles and accessories have become a hot commodity this summer, with some students choosing to upgrade their old equipment or buying the latest VR gear. According to local tech store owner Jorge Alvarez, “The demand for gaming systems has never been higher. Teens are buying top-tier accessories, and a lot of them are investing in gaming laptops that can double for school use as well.”
Fashion Forward
It’s not just tech that’s making waves. MAST students are also turning to fashion to express their summer style. High-end sneakers and brand collaborations seem to be the go-to purchases for those looking to stand out. One of the hottest items on the list? Sneakers.
“I spent most of my savings on a custom pair of Jordans,” said Mia, a sophomore. “It’s all about personal style, and I wanted something that no one else has.”
Sneaker culture has exploded in recent years, with limited releases driving prices up, and teens jumping at the chance to buy rare kicks. The market has even expanded to include local Miami-based brands that are seeing a significant rise in demand.
“I spent $200 on concert tickets for this EDM festival. It was an unforgettable experience,” said Lucas, a freshman. “I’d rather spend my money on going to events or hanging out with friends than buying more stuff. It’s more fun that way.”
The Influence of Social Media
With Instagram and TikTok as the go-to platforms for keeping up with trends, it’s no surprise that many students’ spending habits are shaped by what they see online. Whether it’s a viral challenge or an influencer showcasing the latest product, social media has become a powerful driver for teenage spending.
“It’s crazy how much I’ve bought because I saw it on TikTok,” said Carlos, a junior. “I just bought a ring light because every influencer has one, and I wanted to make my selfies look better”.
As this summer continues, Miami’s high school students seem to be dividing their money between tech, fashion and experiences. Whether it’s spending the weekend at an exclusive music festival or upgrading their wardrobe with the latest sneakers, one thing is clear: Miami teens are defining their summers by their passions and what brings them joy both online and offline.
