Ms.Paisley’s general paper classes took a field trip to Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, this Wednesday and Thursday. The goal of the trip was to educate students on Florida’s rich history while also enjoying its great natural beauty.
Students had the opportunity to visit the Cape Florida Light; the oldest standing structure in Greater Miami, now in its 199th year. Students learned the history behind the lighthouse like how it originally only covered a 12-mile radius. Later, being constructed 30 feet higher to have an 18-mile radius; in an effort to help sailors avoid pirates operating from key Biscayne to Key West. As well as fun facts like how Juan Ponce de Leon, famous Spanish Conquistador, originally called Key Biscayne, Santa Marta when he found fresh water on it and claimed it for the king of Spain.
“I’m so grateful we got to have a look inside it and see the beautiful island from above.” Katerina Linfield, MAST 10th grade student, commented of the lighthouse.
The field trip also gave students a chance to be outside enjoying the state park and to participate in a picnic with their friends after the very impressive tour of the lighthouse.
“I had a great experience with my friends and Ms. Paisley did a good job at organizing everything” Linfield, added of the trip.
