MAST Academy administration hosted a meeting with grade 7 parents and faculty members. Principal Dr. Cadian Collman-Perez states that the purpose of this meeting was to strategize a solution to the anti-Semitic symbol drawn by a student in a classroom of grade 7 students. As of Monday, May 13, the culprit has not yet been identified therefore no consequences have been faced.

During the meeting, parents raised the question: what are the consequences the offending student will face and what can be done to educate students on the severity of the situation?

Social studies department chair Mr. Bryan McFarland proposed multiple short-term and long-term solutions to educate the student body, the class of 2029 in particular. This includes sharing audio recordings from Holocaust survivors before the end of the school year.

Another parent brought up the lack of understanding from parents.

“It seems like the parents don’t understand the severity of this situation and how offensive it really is. They prioritize forgiveness and second chances over punishment for such a heinous act,” the parent said.

Collman-Perez suggested a solution to work with MAST’s PTSA to inform parents in a workshop in the near future.
