MAST Academy’s boys’ soccer team faced off against North Miami High in the first game of its season Monday, walking away with a 2-2 draw.

With a strong start to the preseason, beating Key West 5-1 and St. Brendan 6-1, this game may have come as a shock. For the most part, the Makos dominated the field. However, they conceded two penalties which cost them the three points and made them settle for one.

With a strong start to the game, it looked like it was going to be a comfortable win for the Makos. Unfortunately, key players such as senior Nahuel Garcia and junior Marcos Mendendez had to be taken off the field due to injury. Besides these challenges, the Makos went 1-0 up at halftime thanks to Lucas Keller’s free-kick goal. This lead was to be short-lived, as the Makos conceded an early second-half penalty. Luckily, subs like Cristobal Tedin and Santiago Kong managed to switch the team’s tempo and helped MAST go up again, 2-1.

The team held this lead up until the last minute of the game, when a controversial penalty call allowed the visitors to draw even.

The team will hope this setback turns into motivation for its next game, scheduled to be this Thursday against J.C. Bermudez Doral Senior High School.
