Australian-Japanese singer, George Miller, otherwise known by his stage name Joji, released his new single and music video, “Gimme Love,” on April 15. The alternative R&B track is ridden with electronic lo-fi instrumentals and is split into two discernible parts. The first half’s quick tempo and funky pop sound ushers in Joji’s hazy vocals as he sings “gimme gimme love…when I’m gone.”
The music video follows Joji’s character, a young engineer, up until the track slows down to a ballad. Slower strings and piano instrumentals play in the background as Joji hijacks a rocket ship and blasts off from Earth, much to the horror of his coworkers and superiors. The outro takes on a melancholic approach with ethereal-sounding oohs and the lines “Everyone’s looking for something to hold / But I can’t let you go.”
“I think George Miller once again made a fantastic song when it comes to “Gimme Love.” The lyrics are well-thought-out and the images in the video go well with the lore behind his other music video, Sanctuary. Anyone can tell if a music video is from Joji because of the beautiful artistic touch that he adds to them. You can hear how he’s improved his music,” junior Ashley Muñoz said.
Many fans have praised Joji’s development in the music industry after the former YouTube personality quit posting on the platform to pursue a music career. “Gimme Love” makes that fact evident, with the video garnering more than 16 million views.
Joji’s sophomore album, Nectar, releases on July 10.
