The start of a new year is the perfect time to think about what we want to change
or improve in our lives. New year’s resolutions have been around for as long as we
can remember. Whether it’s getting healthier, learning something new, or just doing
better in school, a lot of people make New Year’s resolutions to start off the year
right and set goals that will guide them throughout the year. We asked some
students some of their resolutions to see what people are focusing on for 2025.
Why people do new years resolutions?
Before we get to that, why do we do new year’s resolutions and where do they
come from? People make New Year’s resolutions because it’s a chance to start from
starch and set goals for the new year. The idea is that the new year gives us kind of
like a fresh start, so it’s the best time to think about things we want to improve or
change in our lives.
Origins of new years resolutions
The tradition goes back over 4,000 years ago when ancient Babylonians were the
first to make resolutions. They would promise their gods to do things like return
borrowed items or pay off debts, hoping to have good luck and a better year. Over
time, the idea of resolutions changed, and now it’s something personal that we use
to reflect on our lives and try to become better versions of ourselves.
Interviews
We interviewed some students and here are their resolutions the first makos
resolution was to manage their times better, he said that he doesn’t manage his
times very well and wants to work on that for the new year “I play sports almost
every day and balancing that out with school, friends, and sleep is challenging as I
go to a quality school like Mast that expects so much.” We asked him 3 things he
can do to fix his time management and he talked about having “I’m going to have
an established sleep schedule; I will be more organized in school and
I will stop procrastinating and start doing things on time.” We also interviewed
another student whose new year’s resolution was to eat better. He said that he has
been wanting to eat cleaner and better for a while and thought the new year was
the best time to start as many others have.
