As summer rolls in, a lot of high school students at MAST find themselves juggling internships, part-time jobs, and a busy social life. It can get overwhelming but it doesn’t have to be. With a little planning and the right mindset, you can stay on top of things and still enjoy your break.
First things first: set some goals. Ask yourself what you want out of this summer. Is it gaining experience? Learning something new? Saving up for something cool? Having those goals in mind makes it way easier to prioritize your time and take the pressure off the unknown.
Next, try creating a schedule. It doesn’t have to be super strict just something that helps you stay organized. Use a planner, an app, or even just a whiteboard to map out your work hours and be sure to carve out time for fun. Whether it’s beach days, late-night hangouts, or just chilling at home, seeing everything laid out helps you find that sweet spot between productivity and play.

Senior at MAST Academy Layla’s Llahues states,” Laylah Llahues “The most effective strategy for me has been to work during the weekday, which often includes volunteering or summer work, rest during the evening, and hang out with friends and family over the weekend, similarly to during the school year.”
That said, leave room to breathe. Life happens, causing plans to change or not happen, and sometimes you just space to account for these changes and give yourself a well deserved break. Summer isn’t about packing your days from sunrise to sunset—it’s about avoiding burnout and feeling good. If you’re working, look for roles that are flexible and align with your goals. A little communication with your employer can go a long way in keeping your schedule balanced.
At MAST Academy students Madeline Shepard shared that, “I think I find it effective to set off time towards completing important work such as summer classes or summer reading. However, I also set apart time for relaxing or things I enjoy. I usually keep track of my responsibilities for the day in my note’s app and once I’ve finished them, I have plenty of time to relax.”
Planning group outings after a long week of work I’d also a super good way to unwind. Whether it’s a picnic, a movie night, or a beach trip, those moments make your downtime more meaningful and memorable during the summer
